📅 Phnom Penh, July 23, 2025

The Thai government, through its 2nd Army Region Command, has announced the temporary closure of the ancient Ta Muan Thom temple for a period of seven days, from July 25 to 31, citing security measures following reports of “suspicious activities” near the border area.

The move has triggered renewed tensions between Cambodia and Thailand, as Cambodian authorities have strongly condemned the decision and called for bilateral dialogue to resolve the issue peacefully.

📍 Heritage Site in Crisis

Located in Oddar Meanchey province, Ta Muan Thom Temple is an ancient Khmer architectural heritage site that has long been a source of dispute between the two nations.
Although the temple is situated within Cambodian territory, its proximity to the border has often led to political and diplomatic friction.

🎙 Official Statements

Lt. Gen. Thawisak Suphapun, Commander of Thailand’s 2nd Army Region, claimed that the closure is intended to “reinforce security” after intelligence reports of unclear movements near the area.
He confirmed that tourists will not be allowed to enter the temple during this period.

On the Cambodian side, the Ministry of National Defense stated that Thailand’s move represents a violation of national sovereignty and bilateral agreements.
Chhum Sochheat, the ministry’s spokesperson, said Cambodia will raise the issue with UNESCO and the United Nations, seeking international attention.

🧠 Analysts and Public Reactions

Political analyst Seng Sophorn predicted that the temple closure might be part of a Thai strategy to assert power.
He warned that tensions could escalate if both sides fail to engage in peaceful negotiations.

Meanwhile, local residents have expressed concern over the economic impact of the closure.
Sok Saran, a 45-year-old villager, said:

“This temple is a source of income for our community. The closure could affect our livelihoods and disrupt the peace in our area.”

🕊️ Calls for Peace

The Cambodian government has urged Thailand to reconsider its decision and resume dialogue to find a peaceful solution.
Citizens and civil groups have also called on both sides to find common ground and prevent future conflict.

🏛️ Heritage Should Not Become a Power Struggle

Experts emphasized that cultural heritage sites such as Ta Muan Thom Temple should be jointly preserved rather than turned into points of confrontation.
They urged UNESCO to take a mediation role to ensure the protection of the site and maintain regional peace and cultural integrity.

📌 Situation Awaits Resolution

As the situation around Ta Muan Thom Temple remains uncertain, international observers have called for cooperation and restraint to avoid another border conflict that could threaten peace in the Southeast Asian region.
